Running from Land’s End to John O’Groats for mental health charity

LOCAL businessman, Sam Gooding, has run from Land’s End to John O’Groats in aid of Wiltshire Mind, a charity that provides vital support for those dealing with mental health.

Sam was part of a team of 15, running in relay through the night and day, who made it to John O’Groats only six days after leaving Land’s End.

The runners were all part of the New Era Fitness group in Melksham run by DJ Hussey. He chose to raise money for the charity Wiltshire Mind in memory of his father, who died after suffering depression, when DJ was just four years old.

Sam Gooding, who runs Gooding Accounts in Westbury, ran the equivalent of a half marathon each day throughout the six days. The challenge took place through summer storms and on some of the countries’ busiest roads. Their target of reaching the finish line in seven days, was completed a day early.

Sam said, “The run was tough, as much mentally as physically and there were a lot of hills to tackle, especially in Cornwall. However, myself and a number of other runners became faster as the week progressed, which was something I certainly didn’t foresee.

“I love facing a challenge and also supporting local charities and the community, thus this opportunity represented a win on both fronts from my perspective, which is why I decided to do it.

“Pounding the pavements is not something I’ve ever been keen on, I’d happily chase a football or rugby ball all day, but I’m not a keen runner. Thankfully I had a lot of support from teammates dragging me out for my daily 5am runs before work.

“I’m a little tired from the lack of sleep after the challenge, but my body actually feels really good considering. I’m already back out there training, ready for whatever the next challenge is!”

Together the team has raised in excess of £15,000 for Wiltshire Mind. Donations are still coming in and if anyone would like to donate please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/themightylejog
