FRIENDS and supporters of the local ‘Nick Jones Foundation for Bereaved Children’ have climbed Ben Nevis, raising money for the foundation whilst bonding as a team.
Nick Jones, who is terminally ill with malignant hypertension, has set up a foundation in his name to support children who are dealing with bereavement. He is planning to climb to the base camp of Mt. Everest to raise funds. Celebrity, Peter Andre, who is an ambassador for the foundation, has agreed to join Nick on the Mt. Everest climb.
A group of friends and now committee members of the foundation agreed to join the duo and as part of their training, were aiming to conquer the Three Peaks Challenge – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon – over the weekend of 20th -22nd July.
However, the Three Peaks didn’t quite go to plan, with an 11-hour drive to get there, including hitting a deer en-route. There were also injuries, leading to an air ambulance evacuation from the mountain and another member being carried down by other members of the team, with both ending up in A&E. To top it all, the team missed their hotel reservation at Scafell Pike and had to deal with bus sickness!
Even though they conquered one of the three peaks, the team said it was a great way to bond and encourage each other to get to the top.
Nick Jones told White Horse News, “The peaks was a great test, chaotic but we all worked well and bonded, so couldn’t have asked for much more to be honest. Every single person was incredible and spirits never dropped.
“In terms of the foundation it is doing exactly what I expected and is growing fast and not losing momentum. I’m not getting much support medically with my condition, so having a lot of work to do is definitely keeping my mind occupied.
“I have been working hard with the team and the more people I speak to, the more my message is being latched onto and we will then become a permanent support for the kids.”
The foundation has organised more events including a three towns walk on August 4th, walking through Warminster, Frome and back to Westbury where Players will be holding a family fun day from 12pm including donkey rides, bouncy castles, food, music and more.
