CROWDS of people thronged Westbury Market Place for a full day of summer celebrations, enjoying entertainment, street food and glorious sunshine on Saturday 7th July.
Throughout the day, a street market of stallholders, entertainment, street food and fairground rides braved the heat and attracted the community to come together for a Caribbean-themed party, organised by Westbury Town Council.
Performances from dance troupes, pirates on-board ship, talking parrots and an energetic samba band led the way to an evening of live performances on stage in the Market Place. Caribbean party-goers were in fine voice following England’s win in the World Cup against Sweden, as they sang along to Oasis hits from the headline tribute band act ‘Definitely Mightbe’.
Mayor of Westbury, cllr Ian Cunningham said, “Well done to all those who organised this amazing event. It was very well attended and from feedback I received, much appreciated. The concert in the evening went well with a large crowd.
“Thank you to all our staff who worked so hard on the day, particularly Martin (and before him Verity) and our clerk, Deborah – and also for a great deal of work before the event. I’d also like to thank Leander Morales from GM3 music for his work and advice.
“And I’d like to mention all those (unpaid) councillors who volunteered and contributed to the events working group led by Jane Russ and who volunteered on the day.
“The hired staff from the various agencies also did a great job on a very hot day. We had great help from the cadets at Matravers who turned up in force to do whatever they were asked – brilliant.
“The stallholders, fairground and entertainers all worked hard on a day when many would have taken it easy. The performers were extraordinarily good during the day and evening and must be congratulated for giving it their all, despite the heat.
“There was much for you all to be proud of as a team – I was certainly pleased to be associated with the Westbury Town Council and Westbury.
“Finally, I’d like to thank all those who turned up to the events throughout the day and supported their community. We hope you enjoyed it.”
