Kwik cricket festival is a big success!

WESTBURY & District Cricket Club hosted an  annual under 9s Kwik Cricket Festival at Leighton Sports Centre on Sunday 24th June to get young children engaged in the sport.

Over the summer, at different towns and villages, children aged 5-9 get the chance to practise their cricket skills in a game-based situation. The festival includes friendly matches of Kwik cricket that teach the children about participation and having fun. Each squad played three games, meeting new teams along the way.

The teams involved were Bathford, two teams from Keynsham, Shrewton, Bradford on Avon, Heytesbury and Sutton Veny, South Wilts, Beckington-Rode-NSP, Devizes, Trowbridge, Winterbourne, Winsley and finally, two teams from Westbury.

Paul Gainey, youth coordinator and under 9 head coach for Westbury & District Cricket Club said, “At this age group we want the children to feel engaged and enjoy it, rather than worry about results.

“On the day, we had a barbecue with meat supplied by Elliot’s butchers in town. Andy Elliot, owner, is a club sponsor and ex-player of many years! We also had a massive cake sale, with home-baked goodies from our parents. The bar was open for hot and cold refreshments and ice creams.

“We raised a lot of money for the club and also Breast Cancer Awareness, the charity the club supported all weekend.”
