Swim to win – celebrate 130 years of Westbury Pool

Westbury Pool is  to celebrate 130 years of swimming in Westbury on Thursday 24th May, opening its doors at 7.30am.

The centre reports, “If you’ve not signed up for our Swimtag challenge, there’s still time… all you’ve got to do is swim 130 lengths of the pool, which is 2,599 metres, the exact distance from Westbury Pool to the tip of the White Horse.

“You don’t have to swim the distance in one go, but you must complete the challenge by 23rd May for your chance to win three months’ free swim membership – the challenge is open to everyone aged 18 or over.  If you’re not lucky enough to win our great prize, don’t worry as you can still sign up for a swim membership on the day, paying just £18.88 for the first month.

“There’s lots going on throughout the day, so please pop in at a time that suits you, although it would be great to see you at 5pm for the re-blessing of the foundation stone with Rev. Rhona Floate.

“Make time to visit our amazing pop-up museum, and take a trip down memory lane as you find out about the history of the pool, the people who made it happen, along with stories from the local community. This treasure trove of information has been brought together by the local Westbury community, with help from Trowbridge Museum, Swindon and Wiltshire Heritage Centre, Westbury Family History Group and the Westbury Heritage Centre.

“Westbury Pool has been a focal point of the town since it opened in 1888 – and whilst the world has moved on, swimming remains as popular as ever.  Resident ghost ‘George’ has also been invited, but we can’t promise he’ll make an appearance on the day.  Doors open at 7.30am and close at 10pm – expect fun, fancy dress and frivolity
