Volunteers sought for new Movement for the Mind for Westbury

Volunteers are needed for a new creative dance and fitness group for people living with dementia in Westbury.

Alzheimer’s Support has started a fortnightly Movement for the Mind group, with funding from Westbury League of Friends. It meets on Friday mornings at Grassacres Hall and is similar to a successful group run by the charity for four years in Melksham.

The new group is for people living with any type of dementia and a family carer to enjoy together and is carefully tailored to meet everyone’s needs. It is led by an experienced dance teacher and supported by volunteers who provide a friendly welcome, help set up the room, serve refreshments and take part in the activities.

Babs Harris, Alzheimer’s Support CEO said, “We have been running for a couple of weeks and already have 18 members, which is brilliant for a new group. It means that we could do with some additional volunteers, so if anyone is free a couple of hours each fortnight, we would love to hear from you.

“We know that gentle exercise is very good for people with dementia and their carers, and it is also very beneficial to get out together and join a friendly and supportive group who are facing some of the same challenges. Movement for the Mind has been incredibly well received in Melksham and we are delighted to be able to bring it to Westbury, thanks to the League of Friends. You do not have to be superfit to come along, as all the movement can be done from chairs if needs be.”
