Westbury 10-28 Pewsey Vale – Dorset & Wilts Div. 2, Sat. 10th October

The match started well for the home side when three minutes into the game, the Pewsey Scrum Half was caught off side at a scrum and Simon Higgins kicked a penalty to put Westbury three points up.

Their joy was short lived though, when straight after the restart and with Westbury trying to clear the ball out of their 22 metres area, the kick was charged down and a Pewsey player pounced on the ball to score the visitors first try which was converted.

Only five minutes later  Pewsey’s second try was scored due to poor tackling and bad alinement in defence leaving huge gaps for the attacking backs to breeze through to touchdown.  Less than 10 minutes of the match gone and Westbury were two scores down.

After that setback, Westbury were able to tighten their game and certainly became more competitive, but without any reward.  The home side did lapse in concentration on the half hour when Pewsey took a quick tap penalty and with Westbury half asleep barged over the try line to score their third try.  Westbury were 21 – 3 down at half time.

The second half was a much more even affair with Pewsey scoring their fourth try for a try bonus point and Westbury managing to pull one try back from a catch and drive at a lineout, with replacement hooker, Jamie Comley, driving across the line.

Pewsey Vale were good value for their win but the match could have been closer if the White Horse Men had been more ‘switched on’ in the first period.

That said, a few of the home side put in a good shift, Arron Vaughan, Simon Higgins played well but the sponsors man of the match was Jamie Comley for his huge impact in the second half.
