Cheddar 4-2 Westbury United – Toolstation League Division One, Saturday 12 September

If United can take anything from this match it is that they won the second half 2-0 because, to be brutally honest, not only did Cheddar hold a 4-0 half-time lead, they could have had double figures before the break.

As good as the hosts were in that opening period, Westbury did not help themselves with an all-round sloppy performance, although thankfully keeper Charlie Heydon was on the ball to make several fine saves!

Sam Jones scored a hattrick starting with the opening goal with a simple finish at a corner after 5 minutes. A number of chances went begging, including United’s only attempt of the half which saw Mark Young’s header cleared off the line, before Sam Jones scored again on 28 with a low drive from outside the box.

When Heydon fluffed a clearance straight to Ricky Bennett, the grateful Cheddar forward smashed in the 3rd goal on 33 and it became 4-0 soon after when Sam Jones got on the end of a fast passing move. They could have had a few more before the break but it remained 4-0.

The second half looked set to follow a similar path when Adam Jones’ 18 yarder rebounded off the post, but Westbury got stuck in and this, allied to Cheddar’s increasingly frustrated play, allowed Levi Wood to sprint through and give his side a consolation goal on 58.

Heydon made a few more saves while Dan Moore forced home keeper Mark Dangerfield into his only meaningful work of the afternoon, before Dave Macey unleashed a remarkable long range goal on 80 to further reduce United’s arrears.
