‘Westbury Leg Club’ to open next month

Westbury Group Practice  plan to open a new Leg Club on Monday 2nd March.

The venue will be Grassacres Hall, Eden Vale Road, Westbury (BA13 3NZ). The Leg Club will be open every Monday, 9.00am – 12.00 midday and is drop-in.  Patients who attend will automatically become lifelong members of the club at their first visit, and will be encouraged to continue to attend the club once their legs are healed for social and health promotion.

The Leg Club is based on an award-winning model founded by former District Nurse Ellie Lindsay. Evidence shows Leg Clubs, which operate in a non-medical setting, lead to improved healing rates by encouraging members to become involved in their care.

Venous leg ulceration currently costs the NHS an estimated £400m a year and this innovative approach has been shown to be more cost-effective in terms of nursing resource.  Good preventative care will reduce the incidents of future leg ulcers.

The Leg Club will be run by staff from Westbury Group Practice with the help of volunteers.  Its specialist nurses and health care assistants will treat and dress patients’ legs in this non-medical setting adhering to the Leg Club’s recognised standards for hygiene and infection control.

This exciting initiative is in addition to the current traditional nurse appointment system already available.
