Westbury United 0-2 Almondsbury – Toolstation Division One, Sat. 25th January

WESTBURY’S unbeaten run came to an end at the expense of an Almondsbury team who have now won five in a row.

A howling gale affected the match and it was the visitors who adjusted better while United struggled to create any chances until the closing stages.

Brett Agnew outpaced a sleepy home defence to open the scoring with a fine finish on six minutes and it took a series of excellent saves by home keeper Rob Brown to keep the score down to 0-1 at half time; Brown saved well to deny Agnew, Joe Black, Simon McIlroy and Russell Church.

The closest United had come in the opening period was when midfielder Marc Scammell tried his luck from long range with the ball flying narrowly over the crossbar.

Brown also saved well when McIlroy got in early in the 2nd half before McIlroy got his name on the score sheet on 54 when he doubled UWE’s lead after a pacy cross field move involving Church and Black. Simon Millard and substitute DJ Wheeler went close as Westbury pushed men forward late on, Millard’s fizzing shot flying inches wide and DJ’s hitting the back of a defender who was lucky to be in the way! However the only save visiting keeper Matthew Semple had to make was when his own defender diverted a DJ free kick towards goal.
