Lions have donkeys under starter’s orders in Westbury

WESTBURY Lions Club is holding its 8th Annual Donkey Derby on Sunday 30th June at the White Horse Country Park.

Family-friendly attractions include a funfair and bouncy castle, mini railway, coconut shy, tote and lots of stalls provided by local charities and businesses. In addition to the fun and games there will be a fully licensed bar and hot food for mums and dads, as well as the old favourites such as candy floss, sweets and popcorn for the kids.

Also making a repeat appearance will be characters from the Star Wars movies, which last year proved to be a huge hit with parents and children alike and who kept the characters busy posing for photographs throughout the afternoon!

Children under 14 weighing less than seven and a half stone can fulfil their racing dreams and take part in donkey derby race (with their parents’ permission) by simply calling into the jockey tent on the day. Alternatively they can register in advance by calling 01373 823354. With eight races taking place throughout the afternoon, there will be plenty of opportunities to take part in the action.

Those children less inclined to try racing can opt for a more sedate donkey ride between races and as always, there will be a chance to meet the donkeys in the corral while they enjoy a break.

David Firth, president of Westbury Lions said, “The Donkey Derby has become a firm favourite with the people of Westbury, and we are keen to ensure it continues to deliver the fun and value that residents have come to expect.

“We have been very well supported over the years with this event, and it is a pleasure to see everybody turning up and having so much fun on the day.  All the monies raised from the Donkey Derby are carefully distributed to charities and people in Westbury and the surrounding villages.  Anyone who needs our help or support can get in touch with our welfare committee through our website or Facebook page.”

Tickets are being held at last year’s price of £5 per adult, with accompanied children entering free.

The opening ceremony on Sunday 30th June will commence at 12.30pm, with the first race starting at 1.00pm.
