Village inn hits the Good Food Guide’s top 150

THEANGELInn in Upton Scudamore is celebrating after it was included in The Good Food Guide’s ‘150 of the best restaurants in the UK’ feature in the Telegraph this month.

Owners Carol and Tony Coates, their four professional chefs, and team of staff say that good food and excellent service is the key to success.

With many years in the hospitality industry already behind them, the couple acquired The Angel in 2002 and their success with the The Good Food Guide has been made even sweeter by the fact they are also celebrating their tenth anniversary at the inn.

The Angel Inn is a traditional village inn with public bar and restaurant and 10 well appointed en-suite bedrooms.

Carol’s strong customer service skills ensures a smooth ‘front of house’ service. Tony takes care of other jobs from  administration to maintenance and gardening.

The couple say, “We have tremendous support from all our staff – restaurant, kitchen and housekeeping, some of whom have been with us since day one.

“Our kitchen has a team of four professional chefs, headed up by Ryan Dunn, who has many years’ experience, having worked in very prestigious establishments to gain his immense experience. In his early days he worked at The Cumberland Hotel,  Lagan’s  Brasserie and latterly on various country house hotels and The Royal Society.”

The Angel Inn’s kitchen prepares tempting dishes such as fresh grilled asparagus with a  poached duck egg, twice cooked belly pork with rosemary and red wine sauce, and lavender honey glazed duck breast with fondant potato.

Carol says, “We’re a fresh food kitchen, we make everything from our bread right through to the icecream and sorbets. We provide restaurant food, which we call ‘modern British’ for want of a better term.

“We have been in the Good Food Guide for a while, but we weren’t aware we’d been chosen to go into that booklet that went in the Telegraph!”
