Issue 470 – Donkeys meet Lions!

THE fifth annual Donkey Derby was the biggest and best yet, with a large crowd turning out to have a flutter or simply enjoy the excitement of the races.

Held at White Horse Country Park on Sunday 12th September, the fine September afternoon brought spectators of all ages out to cheer on the donkeys and their young jockeys.
Eight races were held in total, with on-site bookie ‘Honest Joe’ doing a brisk trade, and donating all profits to the derby organisers, Westbury Lions.

There was plenty to do between races, with fairground rides, donkey rides, face-painting, stalls, a bar, food, and the West Wiltshire Society of Model Engineers’ railway track for visitors to ride on.
Westbury Lion David Firth said, “Without a doubt this is the best year so far. It’s been fantastic! Everyone’s happy; the children are happy, the adults are happy – that’s what it’s all about. We’ve had no problems, and we’ve been very lucky with the weather!”
Last year the derby raised over £3,000 for the Lions to distribute to local charities.
Westbury Lions would like to thank White Horse Country Park, HSBC, Cereal Partners and Chocolate on Chocolate for all their support with the donkey derby.
