Issue 456 – Two honoured with Civic Awards

TWO WESTBURY residents have been honoured with Civic Awards for their contribution to the community in Westbury.

Les Fry and Janette Finbow were officially revealed as the winners of the 2010 Civic Awards at the Mayor’s Reception at the Laverton building on Friday 26th February.
Les Fry, the former Westbury town clerk who retired last month, has received the award for his service to the town. He was town clerk for 12 years. He was unable to attend the ceremony, but arrangements are being made to formally present a certificate to him in the near future.
Janette Finbow received a civic award for her longstanding voluntary work for the Link scheme, a good neighbour programme which matches volunteer drivers with those without access to transport or support resources to access local services and facilities.
Janette said, “It was lovely. I went up and got it, panicked, and didn’t even think of doing a speech, I was so surprised.”
Janette is a co-ordinator for Link, matching drivers with appointments on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
“I do enjoy it,” she said. “I started in 2003, Charlie [Janette’s husband] thought I’d be doing it for a few weeks but here I am. It’s very satisfying and it’s a challenge. God willing I do plan on carrying on with it.”
Westbury Mayor, cllr Sue Ezra said, “Janette really deserved her award. She has worked really hard for Link and it was well overdue. I was very pleased to give it to her.
“It was unfortunate that Les was unable to attend but we will be arranging a time when he can come and collect it and a few people who wanted to wish him all the best can be there too.”
