Issue 465 – supermarket soccer

England’s performance at the World Cup may have been disappointing, but members of Westbury supermarkets were at the top of their game on Sunday 27th June.

Teams from Co-op and Morrisons went head to head in a charity football match held at Westbury Junior School.
Sheila Wollacott from the Co-op said, “The boys all decided they wanted to play football, and they wanted to do something for charity. It was really good, the atmosphere was great and quite a few spectators turned out to cheer the teams on. Westbury Juniors very kindly said we could borrow their pitch, so a big thank you goes to them!”
Morrisons emerged from the match as winners, with the final score standing at 8-5. The footballers all contributed in order to play, and although spectators were not charged, they generously donated to the bucket collection. Money was also raised through hot dog and drink sales.
The match raised a total of £124, which will be split between the Co-op and Morrisons’ chosen charities. Morrisons will donate to their charity of the year, the Wessex Children’s Hospice, while the Co-op will also give their share to a local charity.
