Bratton children raise almost £5k for sick classmate

CHILDREN at Bratton Primary School have taken part in a sponsored superhero run, as a way to raise money to help support the family of a classmate who is currently going through rounds of radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment.

At a time where the focus is usually on Children in Need, Bratton Primary looked closer to home and realised that one of their own students needed extra support. Jamie Butcher, who is just five years old, was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour, last month.

His classmates donned capes and masks to show their support for Jamie and participated in a fun run, with the school asking for donations. A JustGiving page has been set up to assist his family, which has almost reached its £5,000 target.

Nicky Newbury, acting headteacher of Bratton Primary School said, “At the start of October, Jamie was taken into hospital where they found he had a brain tumour. He was immediately transferred to Bristol Children’s Hospital where they did an 11-hour operation to remove it, with the operation being a success. However, the biopsy revealed he has cancer, so he requires chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

“As a school we are in constant communication with Jamie’s dad since Jamie’s admission to hospital. Jamie’s class teacher, Mrs Hawke, has been making some videos and the class children made cards to send home. He also has a homemade Bratton School bear made by Mrs Gray, one of our teaching assistants, to keep him company whilst in hospital. We hope to keep in touch with Jamie, if he is well enough, throughout his recovery. It’s so important that he feels he’s still part of the Bratton Primary community.

“It’s every parent’s nightmare and the family’s strength and resolve is amazing.

“The theme of superheroes was chosen especially for Jamie as he particularly loves superheroes and in our opinion, he is one!”
