Westbury Heritage Centre is now open!

WESTBURY’S new heritage centre is now fully open in the library, run by Westbury Heritage Society.

Among the new exhibits is a schools’ corner containing an authentic old school desk which is already proving popular with younger visitors. 

On behalf of the society ,secretary Liz Argent explains, “We are now on the first floor of the library in a lovely light spacious area, with a wealth of new exhibitions and displays, along with a colourful timeline tracing our town’s history. 

“If you haven’t been to see us yet, please do – you will be assured of a warm welcome and we would love to hear your comments and suggestions. 

“The official opening was carried out by Westbury mayor, cllr Sheila Kimmins, who snipped a ribbon wrapped round our Hercules statue (as seen on the Repair Shop!) Guests included volunteers and members, along with MP Andrew Murrison, town and county councillors and sponsors. 

“Now, we are planning an exciting programme of changing exhibitions, talks, walks and even a quiz. Please join us. Membership is currently £10 per annum and entitles you to discount on purchases, reduced entry to talks and walks, and invitations to member-only events. Find out more at www.westburyheritagesociety.org.uk, pop into the heritage centre or come along to our AGM on November 30th at 7.30pm at the Methodist Church in Station Road. Join us for a picture show and festive eats. 

“Planned exhibitions include Westbury at War, Christmas past, Then and Now, Royal Jubilees and – fingers crossed -The Westbury pliosaur comes home! We are working with Bristol Museum to borrow and exhibit the replica of the skull of the sea monster found in the Westbury clay pit. The exhibition which will last two weeks, will be in August – watch this space!
