Activities for young people to combat loneliness and isolation

Story posted on

Young people in the Westbury Community Area are invited to participate in a range of activities over the coming months as local groups have joined together as Westbury Community Area Local Youth Network.

A group on Facebook and a new Instagram page were launched last week so people can find out what activities are taking place and how to get involved. You can find the Instagram page @westburylocalyouthnetwork or search for Westbury Community Area Local Youth Network on Facebook.

The aim is to combat the loneliness and isolation being away from friends and family while not at school or college can cause. Activities will include sporting challenges, art and photography competitions, youth quizzes, free remote dance lessons, cookery lessons and the network are working on the possibility of young musicians performing remotely and more.

The pages will also promote mental health and other services that are available to young people locally.

Westbury Community Area Board chair, cllr Carole King said, “We know that this is a difficult time for young people because they are not able to spend as much time with their friends, or take part in activities that they usually would and that this can lead to loneliness, isolation and related mental health issues.

“The idea behind re-establishing the Local Youth Network is to create a programme of positive activities to keep young people engaged and give them things to do that are safe and fun. It is brilliant that a number of existing groups have put their hands up to say they want to be a part of this.”

The area board would like to thank a number of organisations who have agreed to participate in the Local Youth Network including: Westbury Town Council, Matravers School, Westbury Youth Football Club, Westbury Youth Club, Avon Valley Runners, ALW Dance, Just So Dance.

If you have any questions or if you or your organisation would like to get involved in the network, you can contact community engagement manager Graeme Morrison either on email graeme.morrison@wiltshire.gov.uk or on the phone 07986 365943
