Sat. 5th Oct. Dorset & Wilts Div 2 North Westbury 43 Corsham 2nds 7

Westbury won this encounter, but perhaps not quite in the fashion that they would have wished.

All started well enough when within 2 minutes, full back Sam McQueen touched down for the opening try after the number 8 Lee McClerg picked up from the base of the scrum, carried up field to release McQueen for him to score.  The conversion was missed.

Within another 6 minutes winger Jamie Dixon scored 2 fabulous tries, both from inside his own half, where he seemed to mesmerise the defenders as he weaved his way to the try line.  Both tries were converted by skipper Aaron Vaughan.  19 – 0 up, all within 10 minutes.  Then, for the next twenty minutes, Westbury were guilty of taking their foot off the gas and losing shape.  This allowed Corsham to really put the home side under pressure and only some determined tackling kept them from scoring.

Gradually Westbury regained their shape and on the half hour, centre Dan Heatley cut through the Corsham defence to score an unconverted try.

Just before half time, Corsham kicked a penalty to touch, deep in the Westbury 22 metre area and from the resulting line out, they executed a fine catch and drive to open their account with a converted try.  24 – 7 at half time.

The second half scoring was opened by Sam McQueen who once again scored a fine individual try which was not converted.  By this time Corsham, who were struggling with a couple of injured players, were forced to ask for uncontested scrums.

With the odds now in favour of the home team, replacement Reece Ball and second row Logan Smith were able to add to the try total, with Vaughan adding a conversion.

The injuries kept on coming for the visitors and on 70 minutes and down to 13 men, a brave Corsham team were forced to concede the match.

43 – 7 to Westbury and the game won.

There will be lots of work that requires attention in training if the team wishes to be successful in  Dorset & Wilts cup match at Amesbury on Saturday 12th October.
