A HEYWOOD couple, Betty and Doug Jones, have celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary – 70 years of marriage.

In 1945, Betty and Doug were both on holiday at Weston-Super-Mare and enjoying the funfair when they saw each other across the dodgems. Doug asked Betty if she would like to join him on the ride and the rest, as they say,  is history!

The couple went on to marry on the 28th August 1948 at a church service in Wrington, North Somerset, surrounded by their friends and family.

“It was a lovely day.” Doug told White Horse News, “The war was not long over and there was still a sense of austerity, so we still had to use coupons! We didn’t have enough to buy everything, including Betty’s wedding dress, so we had to go around begging for more so she could get one. We also had to use vouchers to buy our wedding cake, but all the family came.”

The couple moved to Heywood in 1949/1950 where they continue to live. They had a daughter, Angela, and now have two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, who all live locally, in Westbury or just outside Bristol.

During their 70 years together, they have made many memories but they say the secret to a long and happy marriage is to help each other, compromise with one another, and to be sociable.
