Sat. 30th December. Toolstation Division One Westbury United 4 Bishops Lydeard 0

United maintained 2nd place in the league with this comprehensive victory at a gusty Meadow Lane.

Lydeard actually started well, with James Quick a threat. The forward almost scored twice early on, as well as setting up strike partner Charlie Wilson, who saw an effort disallowed for offside.

Josh Ferguson, who had his best match so far for the club, went close, as did Ricky Hulbert in a frenetic opening spell.

Ferguson put Westbury ahead on 12 minutes after fine play by Kovacs and the hosts never looked back.

Lewis Porter saved well when Quick took a bobbling free kick; then at the other end Hulbert tricked his way into a shooting position but missed the target.

It remained 1-0 at half time but a 2nd half hattrick for Kovacs sealed United’s dominance.

Kovacs latched onto a bad effort by Mark Robinson and applied a fine finish on 52, then pounced onto Andrew Moore’s save from Hulbert to net on the rebound 5 minutes later to make it 3-0.

His hattrick goal came on 72 with a fine 20 yard strike to complete the scoring.

With confidence soaring United attacked relentlessly in the closing stages, but wayward finishing meant they couldn’t add a 5th.
