PLANS have been revealed for 56 new homes on the site of the old Westbury Hospital that was closed  in 2012.

Permission was granted by Wiltshire Council in 2016 for the hospital to be demolished and up to 58 homes  built on the site.

Wiltshire-based Backhouse,  an independent, design-led housebuilder has announced that they intend to submit plans for a high-quality, residential development at the site.

Backhouse, which has its offices in Box near Bath, presented its plans to Westbury Town Council’s highways, planning and development committee last month on December 18th.

The Backhouse residential development comprises 56 homes, a reduction from the 58 that the site has gained outline planning consent for, all of which are being designed by Stirling Prize-winning architects AHMM. The layout focuses around several communal open spaces, bringing variety and character to the development and ensuring a sense of place and community.

Theo Backhouse, founder of Backhouse said, “We are committed to creating an exceptional new residential area for Westbury. The hospital site means a lot to the local community and as part of our plans we will be preserving the foundation stones of the existing buildings to ensure the history of the site is remembered for generations to come.”

The plans will be submitted to Wiltshire Council in the coming weeks.

Theo Backhousel have recognised that the hospital site means a lot to the local community…really? it was the actual HOSPITAL that meant a lot to the local community never mind the foundation stones! of which we as a community donated to the the League Of Friends money of which kept the hospital open (my grandparents being some of the people that gave money to this). Despite a meeting at the Laverton that I attended it seemed a forgone conclusion that the houses would be built on this site WESTBURY wanted to keep the hospital the residence yet again have been ignored….. totally fed up that it seems our councillors never seem to listen.
PS what happened to the money of the ‘sell off’ of the hospital and its grounds it should have gone back to Westbury another question when asked they seemed uneasy about answering…..

We don’t want more homes we want more facilities. Passed over for a by pass, passed over for a leisure hub, overstretched schools, doctors etc and no real facilities, have to travel for everything… All the council planning does is give Westbury more housing and the projects like the waste burning plant that no one else wants!
