In a tight match which could have gone either way, it looked as if the team who got the first goal would grab the win and that turned out to be true. Cheddar got the first and then scored a wonder goal for their second.

Cheddar burst out of the changing rooms and for the first five minutes of the match they had a very good spell. Westbury gained their composure and by the ten-minute mark the game was quite even.

Westbury thought that they had taken the lead on the 21 minute mark; a corner was delivered to the back post, and it was cleared by the Cheddar defence. Jamie Jordan collected the loose ball and sent it back into the goal area. Jordan Pinder rose and flicked the ball over the Cheddar keeper into the net, but the referee disallowed it due to an apparent foul on the goalkeeper. This spurred Westbury on and they lifted their performance.

Cheddar won a free kick on 38 minutes which their No.2 took on and struck the ball goalwards, but Lewis Porter was there to tip the ball over the bar to safety. On 42 minutes Westbury won another free kick due to a deliberate hand ball by the Cheddar No.10. This time the Cheddar keeper was there to punch the ball clear. The half-time score was 0-0.

Westbury were straight into action in the second half, Jake Hiscocks broke from centre midfield out to the right wing, he delivered to Steve Hulbert but he couldn’t take advantage.

Josh Ferguson had a couple of chances, one on the left hand side of the penalty area after a pass from Mark Robinson and the other from the right hand side, neither of them tested the keeper.

The opening goal came on the 72nd minute, when a cross from the Cheddar right was finished by Cheddar substitute Callum Ham. Westbury had a chance to draw back level a couple of minutes later, Hiscocks to a direct shot from a free kick but the keeper was equal to it and made a smart save. On the 77th minute Cheddar got their second, a corner from the right was swung in, Dan Price rose above the crowd and headed it clear. Callum Ham was there to volley a wonder strike from about 30 yards, back into the Westbury net and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it from hitting the net.

The only other clear cut chance of the game was on the 85 minute mark, after a Westbury corner. Jamie Jordan managed to create some space and get a shot on target, but it was glanced wide by one of the Cheddar defenders. The final score of two-nil was probably a bit harsh on Westbury.

Team: Lewis Porter, Jordan Pinder, Leon Greenland, Steve Hulbert, Dan Price©, Dan Jordan, Jamie Jordan, Jake Hiscocks, Mark Robinson, Dan Kovacs, Josh Ferguson. Subs: George Bendle, Matty Mantay (used). Joe Kirkpatrick (unused). Star Man: Dan Jordan.

Up next for Westbury are two tough away games to Radstock and Oldland Abbotonians, followed by a massive home game in the Wiltshire Senior Cup to Salisbury FC.

Salisbury play in the Evo-Stik South West Division, two leagues above Westbury, so it should be a tough game against one of the county’s biggest teams. It should be a bumper crowd on the evening, so why not come down and support the White Horse Man?
