Anybody can cook workshop at Westbury Juniors

Story posted on

PARENTS and year three students at Westbury Juniors School took part in an ‘Anybody Can Cook’ workshop on Wednesday 29th November, making delicious treats and learning new skills.

The fully-funded workshops created in 2008, funded by The Bishop Wordsworth Educational Trust, deliver both in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience of the ingredients and methods in different settings for a variety of people.

The children at Westbury Juniors School and their invited parents experienced family and community interaction and learnt how to make apple and cranberry samosas, and Christmas pudding.

All ingredients were supplied free of charge to the school and two members of the workshop team were on hand to help the children and adults through the recipes. The children did not get away with missing out on using their maths and English skills during the task as they were tested on their measuring, listening and communicating skills.

Sarah, administrator and educator for the scheme who ran the workshop on the day said, “I enjoy delivering the class sessions as it is great for the parents to see their children in the learning environment having lots of fun. The interaction with adults and children is great.”

Vanessa, also an educator and there on the day said, “It’s always satisfying to see each learner gaining confidence, becoming involved and developing friendships along the way.

“Allowing the children to be free to explore and providing a varied range of activities makes each session different and enjoyable for me too – it’s always a pleasure to see the children using their imagination and creativity to adapt the activities in such different ways.”

The children were very excited by the task ahead and even finished the session with the chance to decorate their own Christmas cracker. The ABC Cook! courses deliver a fun and practical approach to healthy eating and nutrition and bring families together.
