WESTBURY is on course to become a dementia-friendly town.

A new group has been set up – the Westbury Community Area Dementia Action Alliance (WCA DAA) – with the aim of ensuring people living with dementia are able to play a full part in the local community.

“The overarching aim of the WCA DAA is to make sure that everyone from the Westbury Community Area living with dementia (both people with a diagnosis and their carers) is respected and enabled to continue to participate in their own community, as well as possible, for as long as possible,” said Carole King, chair of BA13 Community Area Partnership which is behind the scheme.

“To do this the Westbury Community Area DAA will work in partnership across the community to develop practical actions to support those living with dementia and those who care for them. Organisations can undertake actions that are aimed specifically for people living with dementia and their carers or they can commit to making their services and activities generally more dementia-friendly so that people living with dementia continue to feel able to participate.

“The Westbury Community Area Dementia Action Alliance welcomes support and membership from across the community, including businesses, clubs, charities, schools and other organisations.  This does not have to involve you in attending meetings, but we need your ideas and committed actions on how your business/club/group will help Westbury become more ‘dementia-friendly’.

“We are working with area board representatives Liam Cripps, community engagement manager and Lorraine Walters, Westbury’s older person champion, Wiltshire’s providers of dementia services, Alzheimer Support, the town council and other local interested organisations and individuals.”

The BA13 Community Area Partnership is working on behalf of the Westbury Area Board’s health and wellbeing group to develop practical actions to support those living with dementia and those who care for them.

BA13 CAP is now registered with the national group Dementia Action Alliance and are working towards the following:

• Awareness raising – through Dementia Friends information sessions. Encourage more people to become Dementia Friends champions.

• Information – communicating what is available in the area

• Actions – other activities/actions to make the area more dementia-friendly

• To seek membership from businesses and organisations in the Westbury Community Area.

• To support members in the formation of their own action plans

• To establish and maintain effective communication through a wide variety of media

• To develop a network of Dementia Friends champions who will be available to raise awareness of dementia through Dementia Friends information sessions.

• To ensure that the voices of people with dementia, their carers and families are heard and guide our work

• To promote and encourage local activities that support the people living with dementia, their carers and families.
