One draw and one loss in friendlies for Westbury United

Wednesday 24th July – Westbury United 3 – 7 Sherborne Town

A GOAL glut at Meadow Lane as Sherborne showed the scoring touch that saw them promoted last season, while Westbury showed glimpses of improvement under Matty Bown – primarily in fitness and determination to succeed even when so many goals behind.

Simon Millard gave United an early lead from close range after Mark Young’s shot had been blocked, but Town scored 5 before half time courtesy of a 3 excellent finishes and 2 defensive errors.

Westbury reduced their arrears to 3-5 within 10 minutes of the restart; Phil Hampson’s pace creating space for a cross-shot that looped in and Nathan Hallett from the penalty spot after a foul on Millard.

Sherborne quickly restored their 4 goal cushion though with a close range finish and a clever curling effort from the edge of the box.

The only surprise was that there were no more goals in the final half hour as both sides had chances, United going close through Young and Hallett.

Saturday 20th July – Westbury United 0 – 0 Trowbridge Town

ON the evidence of this match both teams need to work on their shooting practice before the league season kicks off!

Trowbridge came closest to finding the net with the crossbar being struck twice, however one of those was by Westbury defender Matt Friendship when a defensive header cannoned off the bar!

For United it was Simon Millard and Nathan Hallett who were guilty of close range misses, but they will also be pleased with a good whole squad work out. Earlier in the day Westbury’s Veterans defeated their Trowbridge counterparts 5-1 with goals scored by Steve Perkins, Steve Munday, Marc Lanfear (2) and Nick Beales.
